*NEW 2027 Medicaid and CHIP have no open enrollment period — you can apply any day of 2027. Coverage can start the month you apply, and many states pay for care up to 3 months before your application month.
This is the biggest difference from Medicare and ACA marketplace coverage, which have fixed enrollment windows. If you qualify for Medicaid, you never have to wait for a sign-up period.
2027 income limits & the 138% rule
In states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA, adults qualify with household income up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level. CHIP and pregnancy coverage reach higher — often 200%–300% FPL depending on the state.
Pending: the 2027 HHS poverty guidelines publish in the Federal Register around January 2027. Until then, states use the 2026 guidelines ($15,960 for a single person in the 48 contiguous states and DC, plus $5,680 per additional household member). This page updates when the official 2027 figures publish.
Subsidy help tied to Medicaid in 2027
- Medicare Savings Programs — State Medicaid programs that pay the Part B premium (and sometimes deductibles/copays). 2027 income limits update with the new federal poverty guidelines.
- ACA premium tax credits — If your income is too high for Medicaid, marketplace premium tax credits cap what you pay for a benchmark plan at 2.15%–10.22% of income in 2027.
Pending: 2027 Medicare Savings Program income limits update after the 2027 poverty guidelines publish. We link the official applications below rather than estimate thresholds.
